Jimmy-Jib Operators

A jimmy-jib operator works with jibs, that is to say boom like extending devices to which camera equipment can be affixed along with a counterweight and camera controls if required. They operate in a see-saw motion about a fulcrum and it is the responsibility of the jimmy-jib operator to oversee the use of this sophisticated piece of technology. Often the balance point is located close to the counterweight to allow the arm to move in a large, sweeping arc to gain maximum coverage. The machinery that the jimmy-jib operator uses allows the camera to be moved vertically, horizontally or any combination of the two.

This device is used for getting high shots on set, or any shot that requires a great distance of horitzontal or vertical movement. Henceforth it is vital that the jimmy-jib operator liases with the production team, directors, cast and other crew to utilise their equipment to its maximum potential. Occasionally these rigs are also mounted on moveable dollys to allow for even larger more sweeping shots. The jimmy-jib operator often uses this equipment remotely since it is impossible to look through the camera directly.
