Grips
The Grips undertake a number of jobs on set depending on where they are working. In the US and Canada grips are lighting and rigging technicians in the film and video industries. The grip makes up their own department on set and are often led by a key grip. They have two main jobs, the first is to work very closely with the camera department especially when dollys and cranes are utilised, and the second is to work alongside the electrical department to put to ensure that all of the lighting rigs and installations are in place for a shot. In the UK, Europe and Australia grips are not involved in lighting, they are responsible for camera mounting and support and excel in this job. The name "grip" comes from the era of the circus although the true etymology is somewhat unclear. On many shoots grips are responsible for the safety of anything on the set as long as it relates to the force of gravity, so stands, ladders, scaffolding, overhead rigs and suchlike all fall under the remit of the team of grips.
