Focus Pullers
Focus pullers (or as they are sometimes known first assistant camera) are responsible for keeping the cameras focus as true as possible during a shoot. Focus pullers work with the camera equipment as a part of the camera team to pull the lenses with devices during a take to compensate for the movement of the camera rig or the subject being filmed. The pullers face a difficult job because the depth of field can sometimes be very small, as little as 1/4 or 1/8th of an inch in extreme circumstances. The job is exceptionally technically difficult because unlike camera operators focus pullers do not look through the camera and cannot see the results of their work as it is being filmed. Focus pullers have to undertake manual work before a scene begins filming, it is common for them to measure the distance between the camera and the subject and perform some equations to work out exactly how the camera should be focused. There are many tricks of the trade that focus pullers use to accomplish their job in instances when literally measuring distances before a shoot is impossible. It is also the focus pullers responsibility to maintain the camera
through the duration of the filming period, this involves the addition or removal of various lenses, filters and other attachments, to reload the camera on occasion, and to keep the camera, lenses and film gate clean.
