Clapper - Loaders

Clapper loaders (sometimes referred to as second assistant camera) is an integral part of any film crew whose main functions are that of loading the raw film stock into camera magazines, operating the clapperboard at the beginning of each take, marking the actors and maintaining all records and paperwork for the camera department. Clapper loaders tends to be more commonly used in the United Kingdom and Commonwealth countries. It is a very varied job with many clapper loaders undertaking a huge variety of tasks depending on the invididual shoot taking place.

Clapper loaders have a large amount of responsibility on each set because they are the only person who will oversee the raw state of the undeveloped negative if film is used. Clapper loaders are the only individuals who will handle the film between the manufacturer and the laboratory and thus are able to ruin and entire day's work if the film is handled badly. Clapper loaders are also often in charge of recordkeeping on set along with a variety of other tasks at the request of the director.
