Camera Assistants

The Camera assistant isthe backbone of any film or television production. The job of these types of assistants can often be quite varied as it encompasses all aspects of media, performance and digital art. Camera assistants help the film operator and set up the equipment when required, ensure that the correct lenses are used and can help with focusing when shooting. The job of the camera assistants is often shared with the focus puller.

Assistants can expect to undergo a practical apprenticeship in the trade and learn about all aspects of camera operation. These assistants and trainees will provide general support on set while the more senior camera assistants will carry out precise complex technical tasks involving the maintenance and operation of the cameras. The camera assistant usually works on a freelance basis and work offers can prove unpredictable at times so it is important to try and plan ahead. Many bookings come in based on recommendations from more senior crew members so it is important to network whenever the opportunity presents itself.
