World Of Film And TVBakewell Derbyshire, SK17, United KingdomDocumentarieshttp://www.worldof-filmandtv.co.uk05:58 10-Sep-2010Documentaries are a very broad category of visual expression that are based on the attempted conveyance of information to an audience. Many documentaries also attempt to "document" reality in a variety of ways. The humble documentaries are seeing something of a resurgence with a modern audience more open to the idea of a fully fledged film made in this style, previously documentaries were limited to hour long TV specials or series at the very most. The fact of the matter is that the genre is constantly changing and evolving to suit the needs of a growing audience so is very hard to define. The word documentary was first applied to this kind of film in a review of Robert Flaherty's film Moana in 1926 by John Grierson. Since that time documentaries have come on in leaps and bounds and done everything from take us to the reaches of space down to the depths of the ocean, and charted our hopes and dreams, fears and nightmares, and explored the most extreme realms of the human condition. The potential for observing life and the natural world and the interactions between individuals is key to the makers of documentaries, and they are spurred onward by an increasing desire to learn more about their subject matter and share this with a wider audience. Documentaries take the form of some of the most complex and interesting pieces of filmmaking that take place.
