World Of Film And TVBakewell Derbyshire, SK17, United KingdomBoom Operatorshttp://www.worldof-filmandtv.co.uk06:13 10-Sep-2010Boom operators are often viewed as assistants to the production sound mixer and other sound staff. The main job undertaken by an operator as their name suggests is the use of microphone and sound equipment to capture sounds in unusual or restrictive places. Whilst this often involves the use of a boom or extender it can occasionally involve such extreme measures as the operators using things such as fishing poles to suspend their equipment. The boom itself that is utilised by the operators is a very special piece of equipment that the boom operators stand on that allow very fine and precise control of the microphone equipment at a relatively long distance away from the actors. Boom operators are also responsible for the placement of wireless and cordless microphones around the set to capture sounds that the equipment cannot. People who work in this job often are also technically skilled in other areas and can switch jobs as and when required.
